It once was the home to illicit whisky distillers. We have three large Reservoirs, Calf Hey, Ogden and Holden Wood, and there are other popular places within Grane and its surrounding areas such as Fairy Glen, Troy Quarry,or just a little further afield there is the Camms....Musbury Valley or the Alden Valley...Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger84125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1572642071614704489.post-61128263697685677652022-09-08T05:13:00.000+01:002022-09-08T05:51:40.374+01:00<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: large;"><span><br /></span></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: large;"><span>In memory of Bryan John Yorke (3rd January 1948 - 28th May 2022)</span><span>.</span></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: large;"> A hugely knowledgeable but utterly humble man. These were identified on Haslingden and Oswaldtwistle Moors.<br /><br />Sphagnum capillifolium subsp. rubellum <strong>Red Bog-moss </strong><br />Sphagnum cuspidatum <strong>Feathery Bog-moss</strong><br />Sphagnum fallax <strong>Flat-topped Bog-moss</strong><br />Sphagnum fimbriatum <strong>Fringed Bog-moss</strong><br />Sphagnum palustre <strong>Blunt-leaved Bog-moss</strong><br />Sphagnum papillosum <strong>Papillose Bog-moss</strong><br />Sphagnum subnitens <strong>Lustrous Bog-moss</strong><br />Sphagnum denticulatum <strong>Cow-horn Bog-moss</strong><br />Sphagnum squarrosum <strong>Spiky Bog-moss</strong><br /><br />Also thanks to Charlie Payne for sending in photos of evidence of <strong>Freshwater Mussels</strong> that have been found on Holden Wood Reservoir (Bay Area). I also received reports from as early as the middle of last year that it was noted that freshwater Mussels where seen to be uncovered and left dying, probably owing to the more recent changes in water levels which the reservoir has been subjected too, this I believe has been necessary for the carrying out of certain essential repairs. It is now thought that these samples of old shells found on the walls, where the result of possibly corvid predation and then bringing the Mussels over to the perimeter walls to try and smash the mussels on the wall to open them.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzy6iesbw0VRqJ3B_Eal6eZpdrZt9kKN0Fj2284jLPYmRX0tqDQmel5RnNBf1YqPScfWozV27J2JnDzs2h3itHoxDXnt-fJuKoieNCz0tEXRUFLidiuKCcVLf-AAK1LltIzuzTf3NpVIc/s1600-h/Mussell+Shell+1+(Large).JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429127172672552034" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 193px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzy6iesbw0VRqJ3B_Eal6eZpdrZt9kKN0Fj2284jLPYmRX0tqDQmel5RnNBf1YqPScfWozV27J2JnDzs2h3itHoxDXnt-fJuKoieNCz0tEXRUFLidiuKCcVLf-AAK1LltIzuzTf3NpVIc/s200/Mussell+Shell+1+(Large).JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCi5yIeAdQK85tdl7Hgwn8oqXkPJUi_CHuLpOEL-GWkNda4sqnCYFVJ7NJAvtFCkptSBF8o1wrwjdpWhF0GX3iUrat2JbUMZNzKXIP88bw_ZS4kekF8yFJ8b2eGWzpO4X-blOOyQGNPi0/s1600-h/Mussell+Shell+3+(Large).JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429127572771775746" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 192px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCi5yIeAdQK85tdl7Hgwn8oqXkPJUi_CHuLpOEL-GWkNda4sqnCYFVJ7NJAvtFCkptSBF8o1wrwjdpWhF0GX3iUrat2JbUMZNzKXIP88bw_ZS4kekF8yFJ8b2eGWzpO4X-blOOyQGNPi0/s200/Mussell+Shell+3+(Large).JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg612kLEMsWyJgNhT53g0bvaK-VU-Ixa-DerOpw09kO7I-aFgv_ybKEyVod4Yq_1RyEI1zeEjkIlnCZxH8-OUKGopzG_ak_x8aPxb4hqAgl4EeJamP5AQeX3Pr_P4xwo9QHTvT9XpPOU7c/s1600-h/Mussell+Shell+2+(Large).JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429127802181299026" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 194px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg612kLEMsWyJgNhT53g0bvaK-VU-Ixa-DerOpw09kO7I-aFgv_ybKEyVod4Yq_1RyEI1zeEjkIlnCZxH8-OUKGopzG_ak_x8aPxb4hqAgl4EeJamP5AQeX3Pr_P4xwo9QHTvT9XpPOU7c/s200/Mussell+Shell+2+(Large).JPG" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1572642071614704489.post-51984610940392427962009-12-14T09:46:00.001+00:002009-12-14T09:47:48.643+00:00More Grane Fungi Photos from Mike Valentine.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipbRx9ASXc72ou25WCrJXjU5fuYjC9NL-NS61uSMZyh0a9pKu-NjBxjg1pDEA4iu7cx9qrW_22cGAD6F_Jric4518DMaL7k4Jg8VzrbWS6puWiAdtbTVMe64JTjQADCJWRZgHhKJgqZBc/s1600-h/Common+Jellyspot+-+Dacrymyces+stillatus+Mike+Val+131209+(Large).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rs="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipbRx9ASXc72ou25WCrJXjU5fuYjC9NL-NS61uSMZyh0a9pKu-NjBxjg1pDEA4iu7cx9qrW_22cGAD6F_Jric4518DMaL7k4Jg8VzrbWS6puWiAdtbTVMe64JTjQADCJWRZgHhKJgqZBc/s400/Common+Jellyspot+-+Dacrymyces+stillatus+Mike+Val+131209+(Large).JPG" /></a><br />

It must have been at least 20 years ago when they emptied the Holden Wood Reservoir, it could well have been even longer. It was emptied so they could do repairs to the valves and also the outlet storm drains and the embankment walls. The fishing rights at that time where owned by the A.E.I. Factory Fishing Club in Manchester and their local bailiff was Mr. Barnes who lived in the last house on Park Lane View (opp Camms). The North West Water Bailiffs came along to net the water and get all the fish out before the necessary work begun, the netted the area which then brought the fish more accessible to be transferred to large bins. At the outlet corner though sadly, by accident a lot of quite sizeable fish went through the pumps and came out all minced up!! it was a tragedy as we remember at the time. There was a good assortment of fish as I remember eg: Pike, Carp, Trout, Chub, Roach, Rudd & Perch. This is the only time I can remember this reservoir ever being empty in more recent times...</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1572642071614704489.post-59933460079535327032009-07-10T08:39:00.008+01:002009-07-10T09:39:51.270+01:00<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-WX-5Mh59RpmmoIRf7_7vwcZZ6ZJdPIN-QMeanxR8jLvUA27akBMa5QZDb0VQU0_fNizko4t8SmUJ2EP2BcUgHbDhbcN2ESVu3DfCglPidrzC2Uk8JOt0uAuHw8MSiN-XDbpO_wz9yrk/s1600-h/Eyebright+(Large).JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356736661383346930" style="FLOAT: left; Close ups of Large female Hen Harrier being haressed by a single crow whilst it slowly made way West to East along the edge of the Moor. Found a new fern and moss (see photo), We do think the fern is probably Common Polypody (Polypodium vulgare) Also checked out at Doles and there are still a few of the old Haslingden bricks on view, two separate designs - one shown here. <em><span style="font-size:78%;">(Click over photo to enlarge)</span></em><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDlBXeILmCqOKpquntAsc8pO_YS2b_EyB0qZGV2wa3zHLWKR1ayycY6dX2J2cYlnYJTJBAQS9rRYab3S1y5vQXBokdOZNvA_1dCX3OL9hRzarRhDK44bpxWvAVQsZ26GydcmXVO7S2OLw/s1600-h/Fern+at+Doles+%5B1024x768%5D.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314219227615657826" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDlBXeILmCqOKpquntAsc8pO_YS2b_EyB0qZGV2wa3zHLWKR1ayycY6dX2J2cYlnYJTJBAQS9rRYab3S1y5vQXBokdOZNvA_1dCX3OL9hRzarRhDK44bpxWvAVQsZ26GydcmXVO7S2OLw/s200/Fern+at+Doles+%5B1024x768%5D.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPhQenWkpnU6Vz4QYabkljUtdnk3yL8zrZmLHGiOoHOPwFmBTnQUz7RK-8O0wG37YN6K12rSkP-cc-33DQfcbI7vBb5vdchlztp5OgPyXncJ9s5t1f0i1rMG3Ff8wWYCPYywpTZy7KJ_k/s1600-h/Moss+near+Doles+%5B1024x768%5D.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314221603221486178" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPhQenWkpnU6Vz4QYabkljUtdnk3yL8zrZmLHGiOoHOPwFmBTnQUz7RK-8O0wG37YN6K12rSkP-cc-33DQfcbI7vBb5vdchlztp5OgPyXncJ9s5t1f0i1rMG3Ff8wWYCPYywpTZy7KJ_k/s200/Moss+near+Doles+%5B1024x768%5D.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfIE-AS5VoKJmw8ETqc85ut0qsPi87PKaTQl99m3GVqR9MLoUnQFZRE6a-EFYH23SxTZ4k0OIkBNRcyEIM1JLWLqvRJ_pdtLmbnOquPqNVz95vL-BFg-bj6BYO8d9gNZlS26pbjqe_xro/s1600-h/Fern+at+Doles+close+up.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314219341928010562" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfIE-AS5VoKJmw8ETqc85ut0qsPi87PKaTQl99m3GVqR9MLoUnQFZRE6a-EFYH23SxTZ4k0OIkBNRcyEIM1JLWLqvRJ_pdtLmbnOquPqNVz95vL-BFg-bj6BYO8d9gNZlS26pbjqe_xro/s200/Fern+at+Doles+close+up.JPG" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1572642071614704489.post-62447035424103500312009-03-15T07:30:00.004+00:002009-03-17T18:48:35.739+00:00Vintage Grane Photo - Navvies who helped build Ogden Res<p><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3DZTY6t6AM-A6yN9Jz0_XMfEzl0GKmqdbXbpVmbT4JgdwZ33YRh-Tr2bX_AubjHZ-Zru1NzHj81Lo5U6-bCNvig4Xg58VISRSem3H7IQLbl6eWWqctkofOAosedxhjhm1mJwpMcLpXPQ/s1600-h/Holden+Arms-+Navvies+who+helped+build+Ogden+Res+Early+1900s+%5B1024x768%5D.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313314078555302178" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 303px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3DZTY6t6AM-A6yN9Jz0_XMfEzl0GKmqdbXbpVmbT4JgdwZ33YRh-Tr2bX_AubjHZ-Zru1NzHj81Lo5U6-bCNvig4Xg58VISRSem3H7IQLbl6eWWqctkofOAosedxhjhm1mJwpMcLpXPQ/s400/Holden+Arms-+Navvies+who+helped+build+Ogden+Res+Early+1900s+%5B1024x768%5D.jpg" border="0" /></a> Holden Arms-Navvies who helped build Ogden Reservoir Early 1900s.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
